It is with considerable pride that Narrominded announces the debut album by Makazoruki. This foursome is one of the most exciting bands in the Dutch music scene today. Singer Skusho, guitarplayer Alen, bassplayer Bacho and drummer Cigi left the studio with a magnificent waverock album in their hands. The material on Makazoruki reminds of dirtier moments in the Sonic Youth catalogue and The Chameleons at the peak of their powers. The lyrics of these emotional songs are written from a very personal approach to English grammar. All members of Makazoruki are from Bosnia, but they currently reside in and around Amsterdam.

Und wieder lässt das kleineniederländische Label Narrow Minded mit neuen Release aufhorchen; während sich Makazoruki deutlich dem 80er-Jahre WaveRock verschrieben haben und derlei Anleihen mit dem rauen “NoiseRock” unsere Tage verquicken, ist das “In-House-Projekt” der beiden Labelgründer Lars Meijer und Coen Pollack (Living Ornaments) eher als trippiger Ambient-Ansatz zu bezeichnen. Beide sehr gelungenen Produktionen dürften in Deutschland schwierig zu beziehen sein. Es lohnt ein Blick auf die Labelhomepage unter www.narrominded.com (Achtung! Ohne “w”!)

These four Bosnians from Amsterdam give me the feeling of being ten years younger than I really am. Mainly because I connect their wonderful style of hardcore / rock with a time in my life, which I recall as my most favourite one: still studying or starting in my first job, having lots and lots of time to listen to music and finding so much pleasure in emotional, guitar driven, straining hardcore. But a kind of hardcore that was mainly about broadening and opening the rules of hardcore and about building an emotional atmosphere and transferring that to the listener that mainly consisted of being discontent with life, the state, the system. Yes, it is quite contradictory that I recall years of my life as the most gratifying ones in which I was mainly concerned with defining all the things I am dissatisfied about, but there are certain reasons to that: live was so much easier, because good and bad was still clearly defined and the youthful feeling of being on top of the world and knowing how things run was still there. Nowadays I had so much experience and glimpses of what makes our world run, made so many compromises, starting with the exchange of workforce for food-money and ending up in doing overhours to buy a new car, that I look back upon this naïve viewpoint with melancholy. Moreover it was a time were is was still able to fall into an issue, a band, a musical style, whatever, with full force, intent and head on without looking sidewards. I miss that. Things used to be easier back then, which is more a result of me changing and not the world changing. But there is no turning back time, is there?
Don’t mistake my self-centered and nostalgic introduction to this review with this record being old-fashioned – it is not. It is wonderful, filled with great dynamic songs that build a wave of gratifying rock in the best manner, using the same manners but keeping it real so as to get nowhere near the blandness and style-over-matter manners of modern alternative rock. Because this is where the efforts of bands like Bad Trip, Fuel (the old hardcore-band not the altrock band appearing on horror-movie soundtracks – but that is exactly what I am talking about, isn’t it) and others seeped into. The mainstream is dividing into branches – metal, alternative rock, electronic, rap – and trying to eat us all up. The difference between here and there is not in the style of music but in the way it is made. And it is one vast area of grey shades and compromises. Makazoruki keep well on the right side, the side that interests me (and hopefully you, the honoured readers), because this difference in doing things is what matters just as much as the music itself. Thinking about it, this is the main connection to hardcore bands like these or the ones mentioned have / had. Otherwise they lead quite singular lives, trying to carve out a niche or path for themselves. Things aren’t that easy (see first paragraph), but one thing is for sure: I’d rather do 1.000 reviews about great bands like Makazoruki than waste one single word on U2.
If anything, Makazoruki sound honest, as if they really mean it. It is in the voice and intonation of singer Skusho, drenched with emotion and haste as if in a hurry (and some echo that reaches back even further to the way singers used to shroud their songs in late Eighties “heavy” bands such as Sisters of Mercy or The Mission – another genre these bands mentioned at the beginning used to fight against), but also in the determination that you can feel in the way the instruments are played. Set down arguments, fix points, mark the borders. This translates into densely defined structures in songs, dynamic tension spanning from one part to the next and an energizing feeling of right now being a very important moment in time, the point where a lot of things are decided that will be influential in the future. Give us time to breathe – some human warmth is provded all the time. Doing all this in midtempo and with clearly defined instruments and a very structured sound is just cream on top of this great debut album. Yes, epic is another word that comes to mind regarding the longevity of their approach. From the opener “Eskimo Girl” with its closing screams of “she’s hunting” to the passing sense of “Sense of Snow” at the end of the record, there is a whole array of highlights. Me, I’ll go searching for some of those old t-shirts that have to be somewhere still.

It’s so weird we, being Belgians, never really look over the border to check Holland bands that much. Imagine noiserock music in Europe without bands such as gone bald or the ex. Experimental bands that mix noise-rock with some sort of a fusion feature on it. This Makazoruki follows quite the same concept in a very unique way.
Makazoruki are 4 people from Bosnia that moved to Amsterdam to record their first demo. They contributed to a Sonic youth tribute album with an extraordinary coverversion of “shadow of a doubt”. This is their debut album on narrominded records. For a start,the artwork is beautiful and appealing. Some collage painting kind of things that create a warm, yet desperate feeling. Artwork that fits the band completely.
If you really want, you can compare every band with noisy influences with Sonic youth but Makazoruki really does have some typical SY sound in it. Still they have this epic vocalist that talks-sings-screams tons of emotions. Be it personal or political, he convinces you of his uprightness. The mix of great technical guitarmusic, epic parlandos and apocalyptic noise bursts from time to time make this debut album on of the most interesting albums of the year. Sounds really 80’s, sounds like the last album you will hear before jumping from a buidling, sounds wonderful.

Bloed aan de snaren, maar het is het waard.
Ik geloof wel dat Bosniërs van nature meer passie bezitten dan wij Nederlanders. De balkangoulash wordt doorgaans heter opgediend dan ons tomatensoepje en misschien schuilt daarin ook de voorsprong die Makazoruki heeft op bands als Voicst en Gem. Goed ze tappen uit wat andere vaatjes, maar de meeslepende passie en agressiviteit zou ik zo graag wat meer bij onze eigen bands zien.
De vier Makazoruki’s groeien op in Bosnië en belandden rond de eeuwwisseling in Amsterdam om daar hun eerste demo op te nemen. Vijf jaar en een bijdrage op het Sonic Youth tribute-album van That Dam! later presenteren ze hun debuut en sodeju wat mogen we blij zijn dat deze band Amsterdam als thuisbasis gekozen heeft.
De rauwe noiserock die het kwartet ons voorschotelt is vooral schatplichtig aan Sonic Youth, maar ook de branie van Black Flag en de melodieuze gave van een band als Hüsker Dü is op momenten goed te horen. Maar het is vooral de gepassioneerde zang van Skusho, ergens het midden houdend tussen zingen, praten en voordragen, die overtuigt. Hij weet een behoorlijke dosis vuur in zijn vocalen te stoppen, zonder à la Henry Rollins compleet over de schreef te gaan.
Erg veel aandacht is er niet aan de productie geschonken. Misschien dat iemand als, tsja, ik zeg maar wat, Steve Albini het album nog wat spartaanser had kunnen maken, zodat al die ophitsende ritmes en prachtige, overstuurde gitaren nog meer bloot kwamen te liggen. Misschien moeten ze maar eens een demo naar de beste man opsturen, of nog beter: dit album. Noem mij maar prettig verrast.

Zatrovani “punkom”, odrasli na (ex-jugoslovenskom) “Novom valu”, ranom “Pusenju”, “Azri”, “Joe Divisionu”, “Gang Of Fouru”, “The Ramonesima”, “The Dead Kennedysima”, “The Clashu”, “Sonic Youthu” – Alen Poparic (gitara), Branislav Gajanovic Baco (bas), Jasmin Husic Skuso (glas) i Sinisa Zoric Cigi (bubnjevi) – svirali su u Zenici, u drugoj polovini osamdesetih, ranih devedesetih godina (proslog vijeka), u dva razlicita, ali muzicki prilicno bliska banda: Lude Krave i Schmaisser. Zajedno sa Kujama cinili su okosnicu zenicke “underground” rock-scene. Na zalost, iza tih grupa nije ostao nikakav sluzbeni diskografski zapis.
Onda je dosao rat i “sticajem okolnosti” (kako to stoji prijavljeno na sluzbenoj stranici grupe) Alen, Baco, Skuso i Cigi dospijevaju u Amsterdam. 2001. godine njih cetvorica osnivaju grupu “Makazoruki”. Nakon upornog i istrajnog vjezbanja u malom podrumu amsterdamskog CMA kluba, i niza svirki po Holandiji, grupa je svoje petogodisnje postojanje nedavno krunisala prvim studijskim albumom.
Muziku grupe “Makazoruki” tesko je smjestiti u jedan odredeni muzicki zanr. U susretu sa njom definicije muzicke kritike krecu se u rasponu od new wavea, preko punka, noisea do emoa. To je zbog toga sto je muzika “Makazorukija” kompleksna. Njihove pjesme nisu jednostavne, ritmovi se smjenjuju suludom brzinom i snagom, i prosto je nevjerovatno koja se kolicina emotivnog, skoro lirskog naboja uspije osloboditi u svoj toj dobro kontrolisanoj “buci”. Bez sumnje da je band uspio naci i izgraditi prepoznatljiv licni zvuk. Osnovni epiteti tog zvuka su: Alenova distorzirana, ali harmonicna i melodiozna gitara; Bacin tamni, teski, “rolajuci” bas koji vas prosto strelja riffovima; Cigijev specifican pristup bubnjevima u kome akcenat pada na “rad ruku”; i Skusina lirika “koja je nastala iz jednog vrlo licnog pristupa engleskoj gramatici” (kako to stoji navedeno na sluzbenoj internet stranici diskografke kuce za koju je band izdao cd).
U subotu 25. 3. 2006. g. “Makazoruki” je u amsterdamskom klubu “De Nieuwe Anita” imao prvu zvanicnu promociju svog cd-a. Njihov prvenac zove se jednostavno “Makazoruki”. Izdat je za mladu holandsku muzicku kucu Narrominded. Produkt je masterizovao Zlatan Hadzic, Sarajlija koji je radio sa imenima kao sto su: Sonic Youth, Motorpsycho, Songs: Ohia, Green Lizard. Omot je uradio likovni umjetnik Igor Krajinovic.
Vece je otvorila holandsko-hrvatska formacija poznatija kao Gone Bald. Gone Bald nosi etiketu “noble-noise” banda, ima zavidnu diskografiju iza sebe, i spada u sam vrh holandske “noise” scene. Karizmaticni frontman grupe, gitarista Ivica Kosavic (a.k.a. Razorblade Jr.) u amsterdamskim “underground” klupskim krugovima slovi za kultnu licnosti. Za vrijeme visemjesecnog odsustvovanja Alena Poparica, Ivica je pomogao “Zenicanima” i preuzeo ulogu gitariste ne sebe. Na taj nacin “Makazoruki” ne samo da su “odradili” par uspjesnih koncerata sirom Holandije, nego je i grupa ostala na okupu sve do Poparicevog povratka. Potpomognuti Razorblade Jr.-om “Makazoruki” su stoga to vece nastupili kao petorka. Zvucali su mocno. Nadmocno! Pun zvuk, tehnicka uigranost i ocita prisutnost entuzijazma zvanog: “cd-prezentacija” ucinili su da “Makazoruki” pruzi jako dobru live-predstavu. Diskografska kuca “Narrominded” predstavlja grupu kao “de best band van Nederland” (najbolju grupu Holandije), sudeci po onome sto je publika te veceri mogli cuti, “menadzersko rukovodstvo banda” nije daleko od istine.
Alen, Baco, Skuso i Cigi, cetiri momka iz Zenice, tamo negdje bogu iza nogu. Tamo gdje je rastopljeno zeljezo teklo kao voda, a voda tekla kraj rastopljenog zeljeza. Tamo gdje su dimnjaci Zeljezare bili prozor u svijet, a svijet dalek, sakriven iza visokih brda, uokviren tek teskim dimom iz dimnjaka. Tamo gdje su celik, vatra i dim bili sinonim za jedan grad. E, odatle su cetiri momka, “sticajem okolnosti”, stigla u ovu Nisku zemlju. Kada su raspakovali svoje kofere i ponovo zasvirali iz njihovih instrumenata potekli su zvuci rodnog grada. Celik, vatra i dim, nego sta!

Dutch label Narrominded is slowly expanding their horizon. In the early days of the label it seemed that they would release anything that would deal with ambient, glitch, electronica or microsound, but in 2005 they expanded to releasing music that deals also with real rock, like their releases of Gone Bald and Quarles van Ufford – free math rock is what they play. These two new releases display their interests very well. From their original line of releases, there is first of all Living Ornaments, the band behind the label. At the other side of the musical spectrum we find Makazoruki, a four piece rock unit from The Netherlands, even when they are all four originally from Bosnia. According to Narrominded they are a ‘hot’ live band and the music is to be compared to Sonic Youth and The Chameleons. I wouldn’t know, since I gave up a while ago on rock music, certainly when it’s supposed to be ‘alternative’. The tracks are considerable longer than any of my old punk records, and more complex in structure than the average punk record. Perhaps perhaps this is indeed quite nice, in fact I wouldn’t dream of even doubting that, but its surely not so my thing. I can listen with interest, but it’s hard for me to relate to this. However it’s a good thing that Narrominded expand their musical horizon, but they see something I can’t.

Makazoruki is een groep die bestaat uit Bosniërs die in 2001 naar Amsterdam verhuisden en hier een band zijn begonnen. Bij Narrominded verscheen onlangs hun eerste album. De muziek van Makazoruki is dik in orde. Een mix van punk, wave en indierock met een hoge emotionele lading. Namen als Sonic Youth en het eveneens uit de Balkan afkomstige Gone Bald schieten door mijn hoofd. Voorwaar geen slecht referentiekader. Ik ben dan ook vooral benieuwd hoe dit live klinkt.

“New Wave met rugbysympathieën”. Zo wordt de viermansformatie Mazazoruki door het fijne label Narrominded omschreven. Iedereen die hun bijdrage op de compilatie Retro Retry (Sonic Youth – Evol), waar alle participerende artiesten een ander nummer van het Sonic Youth album Evol hebben gecoverd, begrijpt dit. Want de met noise doorspekte new wave laat een sterk staaltje beuken zien. Iedereen die hun biografie kent begrijpt de omschrijving nog beter: de nu in Nederland wonende leden komen oorspronkelijk uit de industrie- en rugby-stad Zenic (Bosnië). Toch laten ze op hun gelijknamige debuut veel meer horen dan sportieve new wave. De new wave stukken lijken op The Chameleons en The Sound begeleidt door Sonic Youth, New Model Army of Shellac. De spontane songs met meer een punk-attitude doen me juist meer denken aan een moderne Black Flag en The Gun Club of aan tijdgenoot en geestverwant Gone Bald. De teksten, over alledaagse maar ook politieke onderwerpen, worden op emotionele, energieke en pakkende wijze gebracht door zanger Skusho. Dit wordt uitstekend begeleid met eenvoudige, maar doeltreffende middelen als gitaar, bas en drums. Eigenlijk is deze cd één brok energie dat op smakelijke wijze naar binnengeduwd wordt. De cd bevat emotie, dynamiek, energie, melancholie en gewoon bijzonder goede muziek. “Mazazoruki is de beste band van Nederland” zeggen ze ook wel over het viertal. Iedereen die Mazazoruki geluisterd heeft begrijpt wel waarom dit gezegd wordt.

Of ik nog naar Noorderslag kom het aanstaande weekend. Het is me heel veel gevraagd de afgelopen weken. Het werd me meer gevraagd dan de jaren hiervoor. Ook door derden. Het zal toch niet komen doordat File Under relevant wordt of zo? Kan het me niet voorstellen. Maar het antwoord is dus net als andere jaren: ‘Nee, ik ga niet naar Noorderslag’. De keer dat ik er was vond ik het veel te druk daar in de Oosterpoort en ik ergerde me eraan dat ik niet kon zien wat ik wilde zien. En als ik de verhalen moet geloven van de File Under-mensjes die er vorig jaar waren dan is het nu misschien nog wel erger dan toen. Nee, doe mij dan maar Westerslag, het alternatief dat platenlabel Narrominded aanstaande zaterdag biedt in de kleine zaal van het vernieuwde Haarlemse Patronaat. Zo ongeveer hun hele catalogus speelt daar. Als je van ‘eigenwijze’ muziek houdt en daarom geen kaartje hebt voor Noorderslag (of gewoon omdat het strak uitverkocht is of omdat je het gewoon te ver weg vindt), dan is Haarlem zaterdag de plaats waar je moet zijn. Daar kun je waarschijnlijk ook wel de twee meest van nieuwigheid nog glimmende releases van Narrominded, Vlokken van Living Ornaments en Makazoruki van de gelijknamige band, aanschaffen. Deze geven gelijk ook aan hoe divers eigenwijs kan zijn. Living Ornaments is het knutselproject van de twee bazen van Narrominded, Coen Polack en Lars Meijer. Hun stemmige minimalistische knisperelektronica en samples waarin veel plaats is voor ordinaire instrumenten is voorzien van mooie Nederlandse titels als “Bolderkar”, “Grauwsluier” en “Godgansedag”. Verdwazende muziek.
Makazoruki is een Amsterdams/Bosnische collectief rauw voor de dag komt op hun debuutplaat. Voorzien van een charmant Balkanaccent tonen ze hun liefde voor bands als Sonic Youth en Shellac in krachtige noise. Wij Hollanders zullen waarschijnlijk nooit begrijpen wat zo’n zanger en zijn band, beladen met een rugzak vol shit op hun nek. Geen werk, geen woningen, geen toekomst, het land ontvlucht met een enorme liefde voor muziek. Hun liedjes zitten vol rauwe melancholie. Stel je eens voor dat Groningen en Friesland en Overijssel om de zoveel tijd vechten en dat je dan naar Vera gaat en de pleuris plots uitbreekt. En dat je dan je vriendje uit Grun plots ziet vertrekken naar het front en je hem daar weer tegenkomt en hem naar de kanker moet schieten. Dat kun je je toch niet voorstellen?Als je je dat wel kunt voorstellen, dan weet je hoe Makazoruki klinkt en weet je waarom je naar Haarlem moet komen. En anders kom je omdat je het graag wilt weten.
